Compared to the non-existent manufacturer support I got when I owned a Triumph, it is quite amazing to talk to a dealer who knows anything at all about your 28 year old car. Lloyds of Newcastle have a great parts department, who happily spend half an hour with me in the clonky old ETK looking up obscure parts. They happily order single bolts from Germany for me, and offer me a club discount even if I order two little pieces of plastic for 27p each.
Maybe we should remember that until the E30 BMW was (on a global basis) a somewhat specialist niche manufacturer. The E30 was the car that made BMW globally important. And the E30 has only recently been generally viewed as a classic. So maybe BMW just need time to make the corporate culture change from classics being viewed as rare exotics such as art cars and Elvis Presley 507s, to classics being something that many people have in their garages and enjoy every weekend. Mercedes and Porsche have had more time to make this adjustment.
My concern is, that BMW doesn't want to improve or have a change in culture concerning their classics department. I wouldn't be sure about that....
BMW exists longer than Porsche. Somehow they would have had more time for adjustments than Porsche for example.
